The theory of mineral deposition is both complex and still open to some debate. The criteria used to define mineral deposits are therefore varied and the following pages are only intended to provide a broad overview. The processes that form rocks that are part of the Earth’s crust are ongoing and ore deposits are very special types of rock — ones that are economic to mine and provide the raw materials our society needs.
