Some Guidance Required
Participants in Need of Shepherding
Abstract
This chapter covers situations where you may need to give the participant a little nudge so you can get the kind of feedback you’re looking for, or where you might need to give the participant an assist to help get him back on track for the remainder of the session. These include situations such as a participant who seems reluctant to be forthcoming for fear of getting in trouble or hurting someone’s feelings, a participant who ignores your questions, and a usability study participant who stops thinking aloud. For each situation you’ll learn what to do, what to say, what not to do or say, and how you might be able to avoid it in the future.
