The GNU Utilities

The Free Software Foundation (FSF; http://www.fsf.org) has long been a leader in the open source community, even well before the term open source was coined. (In fact, the FSF's founder, Richard Stallman, doesn't like the term open source; he prefers free software.) The FSF is best known for a project to develop a complete and freely redistributable UNIX-like OS. This project is known as GNU, which is a recursive acronym for GNU's Not UNIX, and the OS that is the goal of this project is known as the Hurd (http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/). Many of the programs developed by the FSF bear the GNU label,as do a few that aren't closely associated with the FSF.
