AS I WAS FINISHING THIS BOOK, I HAD DINNER AT AMICI’S East Coast Pizzeria across the street from Draper University in my hometown of San Mateo, CA. It was especially busy that Sunday evening, and my waiter was being pulled in many directions by impatient and unfriendly customers. I noticed the pressure he was under, but I also noticed his calm. When I left, I gave him a large tip and a pat on the arm, saying I was impressed with his balance—in spite of the impatience around him. He thanked me for noticing and said, “You can’t freak out. It’s just a pizza restaurant.” Leaders can’t freak out either, especially if it’s much more than a pizza restaurant.
