Chapter 11. Problem-Based Learning in the New Virtual Classroom

FOR LEARNERS WITH RELEVANT CONTENT EXPERIENCE who need to build skills involving problem solving and judgment, consider a blended instructional approach that incorporates a guided-discovery architecture. In this chapter we define and illustrate a type of guided-discovery course design called problem-based learning (PBL). We discuss the conditions under which problem-based learning is likely to succeed and summarize a design plan for adapting problem-based learning to a virtual classroom environment.
