When you make the fateful decision to join the ranks of technical consultants, you will at some point start to think long and hard about whom you would want to work for, evaluate each company’s strengths and weaknesses, evaluate your own, and choose one that is the best fit for both you and your employer. At least that is what you should do. Sadly, however, most people, including me on more than one occasion, choose on different criteria, namely
• Is the economy bad? Take the job. It’s money. Rent is due on the 15th.
• Is the economy good? Which of the many companies you are talking to is offering the highest salary? Good, take that one.
