In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama was inaugurated in January and honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in December. The Nobel Committee distinguished President Obama for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” His efforts included a polished presentation to the International Olympic Committee about the strengths of Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The president and First Lady Michelle Obama also met personally with many IOC members and highlighted Mrs. Obama’s dedication to promoting youth sports programs.
