CHAPTER 33

The Proactive Career

Regardless of the size of your company it is up to you how much your manager knows about your abilities and the quality of your work. The traditional work environment in which everyone came to the same office day after day certainly made it easier for your manager to get to know you. This had its pros and cons: not only did your manager see you at your best, he also saw you at your worst. In contrast, as a traveling consultant, it is largely up to you how your manager perceives you.

As consulting companies grow and merge, many consultants become frustrated with their perceived lack of control over their own careers. By proactively marketing yourself, you can take the lead on your own career.
