Elena suspected that the 26 teachers would arrive feeling anxious and distracted. They'd had very little notice about the PD session and were being pulled out of their classes for three days. They were struggling first‐year teachers, most of whom had not entered the profession through a traditional route—they themselves would have admitted that they had no idea what they were doing. Elena understood: This PD was an intervention. It needed to get all the teachers anchored in their purpose, back on their toes, and equipped with a small set of immediately implementable, high‐leverage teaching skills.
