16.1. Listing Materials

Clearing rights often involves lots of paper. The more rights you have to clear, the more organized you need to be. This chapter includes organizational tips to help you approach a rights clearance project.

Some producers prepare rights bibles. A rights bible is a per-second (for audio-visual or audio productions) or per page (for printed productions) listing of each item in the production obtained from a third party. The items include images, music, and footage. Sometimes distributors require that the producer deliver a rights bible with the completed production.
