19.1. Contract Basics
The purpose of a contract is to show that two or more people have reached a mutual understanding. All contracts do not have to be in writing. Many oral agreements can be binding. However, there are certain contracts that by law must be in writing in order to be effective. They include contracts for the following:
• the transfer of a copyright
• the grant of an exclusive license in a copyright
• the creation of a freelance work as a work made for hire
