"Collaboration" can be defined as the efforts of one or more people working with others toward the attainment of a common or agreed-on goal. The literature of experimental research on the subject of collaboration is growing. In such studies collaboration, or cooperation, usually is contrasted with competition. "Competition" can be defined as the efforts of one or more people working against others for the attainment of mutually exclusive goals. The basic difference between collaborative and competitive behavior is the perception of the goal.
