The term ‘ecosystem’ has its origins in biology and was first coined in a business context by large corporations such as Apple, Ford and Walmart, who began to build partnerships beyond industry boundaries.30 These early traits of ecosystem strategy gave them a competitive advantage in comparison with the ‘lone wolves’ in the same market.
