Chapter 6
General Phrases by Attribute: G-N
When giving or writing a performance appraisal, it’s important to always back your phrases with examples. There’s nothing worse than relaying a negative comment without having specifics to show as examples. The same goes for positive statements. Be sure you can relay situations that reinforce the performance descriptors. For appraisals to be useful and effective, they must be objective, consistent, fair, and defensible. Failing to do this can ultimately lead to a system that demoralizes employees instead of empowering them to improve. This empowerment can be a powerful motivator and a tool to help employees value the performance appraisal process.
