WHAT DISTRIBUTORS DO

Distributors “exploit” a film in a variety of markets. Depending on the deal the production company negotiates, the distributor, or its agents—called subdistributors—may license the film for exhibition, broadcast, or sale in the following markets:

  • Theatrical: movie theaters
  • Free television: broadcast television, as opposed to cable
  • Pay television: cable, satellite, pay-per-view, on-demand
  • Home video: sales of the film via DVD or videocassette
  • Commercial video: distribution of DVD or videocassettes for public exhibition
  • Internet: distribution and exhibition via streaming and/or downloaded video
  • Airline: in-flight movies
  • Ships: public exhibition aboard ships
  • Hotel/hospitality: hotel and motel ...
