Adam Sorini and Ernesto Staroswiecki,    Exponent Inc., Menlo Park, CA, United States

Abstract

We present an overview of cybersecurity principles relevant for the smart grid. We discuss cyber-physical security in general as well as specific models relevant to smart electric grids such as the Electricity Subsector Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model. We discuss cybersecurity risk assessment and analysis including penetration testing on the Internet of Things. We also discuss a number of different methods of assessing and analyzing risk such as hazard analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, and fault tree analysis.
