Prognostics for the Power Industry

Abstract

The combination of aging electrical infrastructure and increasing reliance on electricity places a strong emphasis on reliability maintenance efforts for electric utilities. New “smart” technologies offer significant opportunities to increase the reliability of the grid as a whole. In this chapter we review aspects of traditional reliability theory as they pertain to the power grid, and we discuss how new technologies enable a transition in maintenance strategy paradigms.
