Sometimes we expect that a person is going to continue the behavior that we criticize; we do not think she is going to change. In this case, our expectation may cause us to give premature criticism—as soon as the person approximates the behavior in question, we criticize.
Take the superior who expects that his staff member will once again be late with his work. As the deadline approaches, the boss will point out to his subordinate that once again he has failed to meet his deadline.
