RIVALRIES MAKE MARKETPLACES INTERESTING, and there are many to take note of. All of sports is dominated by the Red Sox–Yankees’ rivalry, considered the granddaddy of all feuds. Toyota and General Motors have battled for top honors in the car industry. Boeing and Airbus compete for preeminence in the air. Coca-Cola and Pepsi are locked in a competitive struggle that will likely last as long as people consume soft drinks. And the Energizer Bunny continues to try to thump copper-top battery rival Duracell for the right to power portable electronics. In the computer world, though, no rivalry tops that of Apple and Microsoft.
