A Note to Emailphiles, CrackBerry Addicts, and TurboTexters

Perhaps the title of this chapter makes you feel slightly defensive. Or maybe it makes you want to shout a resounding “Yes! Stop those people!” If you had either of those reactions—or if you are a living, breathing member of today’s workforce—this chapter is for you.

I don’t attempt to hide my bias toward face-to-face communication. Scads of research (besides Dr. Albert Mehrabian’s, as discussed in Chapter 2) attest to the fact that we take one another in through multiple senses. When you eliminate most of them, there’s bound to be misunderstanding.
