Preface

When I began writing this book, I quickly realized that I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I wanted the book to be thoroughly and carefully researched. As a corporate business executive, I believe firmly in the value of research and I do not take it lightly. That said, I also knew that I was racing against the clock. In addition to the publisher's deadline, the world around me was changing fast. I knew on a gut level that the longer it took me to write the manuscript, the more outdated the book would be when it was eventually published.

So I tried to split the difference. I crammed as much research as I possibly could into a brief span of about six months, and converted my research into decent prose as expeditiously as possible. The result is a mixed bag. If you are new to the themes and topics covered in the book, you will find them fresh and exciting. If you are a career banker or investor, you might find yourself thinking, “I already know a lot of this.” If those thoughts enter your mind, I urge you to keep reading. I have tried to include a wide variety of interesting material, harvested from a broad range of sources. Even if you are the most experienced banker in the world, you will likely find new and valuable information on these pages.
