Exclusive or Popular?
SIX-YEAR-OLD LUKE LOOKED UP at his mom (and my friend), Emily, with his big blue eyes. He moved the wisp of hair that had fallen over his cheek and took a deep breath. What he was about to ask his mom was something he had been practicing all morning. He wanted to get his question just right. Finally, he exhaled and made his request: could they get a dog? The family had never owned a dog, and it was something that Luke had wanted his entire life (his words). Just in case his mom said no, he already had a backup plan. He would ask Santa.
