It's time to break free from the limiting view that equates a person's worth solely with their collection of skills, driven by financial incentives. While this perspective served its purpose during the era of skilled factory workers operating complex machinery, we must now embrace a broader understanding of human potential in the age of the internet and knowledge economy.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of the post‐knowledge economy, where knowledge and intelligence are being democratized through advances in technology, focusing solely on skills neglects crucial factors such as drive, motivations, work style, values, and culture. These elements significantly impact job performance and satisfaction, highlighting the need for a more holistic approach.
While skills are undoubtedly important, they are not the ultimate predictor of job success. They serve as a rough tool that we have relied upon due to their tangibility. However, in a fast‐changing world, some skills can quickly become obsolete. Relying solely on skills‐based matching may lead to a mismatch between a candidate's skills and the evolving requirements of the job, resulting in reduced productivity and dissatisfaction.
