Implementing FMEA

What does it take to implement FMEA effectively? As with any defect prevention technique, the benefits achieved are usually commensurate with the effort expended. In terms of FMEA, this also holds true.


Based on Microsoft Engineering Excellence practice guidelines, consider the following prerequisites for completing an efficient and effective FMEA.

  • A skilled FMEA facilitator

    • The FMEA facilitator should have a good understanding of the FMEA procedure and the ability to guide the discussion and keep it on track. This role is often supported by a team manager or lead, but it may also be an independent facilitator if warranted by the FMEA focus area or team dynamics.
