Managing Change
One useful service that consultants can provide to clients is helping them think through the barriers and drivers of change in their organization, especially when clients choose to implement solutions themselves. Our advice can add a lot of value in this challenging area. One reason implementation is so difficult is that all organizations have a natural tendency to resist change. As introduced in Chapter Eight as a topic for coaching, resistance can arise for many reasons, such as fear of disruption to routines or political disruptions, ideological differences, or high levels of anxiety (Burke, 2008; Hambrick & Cannella, 1989); here we will consider a few of the most common causes:
