The How of Investigation
Abstract
The premise of this chapter is that there are two different how questions to answer regarding an investigation: how was the crime committed? and how can it be solved? A case study is used to illustrate that these how questions are separate issues. The chapter asserts that today’s scientific detection techniques are updated applications of common sense and uses case examples to illustrate both exploratory and inspectional means of identifying how a crime was committed (the commission strategy).
