Abstract
This chapter reviews the factor of when with regard to the investigative process and notes how known time can eliminate possibilities and suspects as well as give direction to the detection strategy through time-related observations. The chapter explores methods of establishing time, such as self-evident time, significant time variations, determining time by incidental records (access control records, appointment calendars, correspondence, automatic teller transaction slips, email, movie tickets); determining time by events; and how to pre-establish time (adding a date and time stamp to CCTV recording surveillance, implementing counting systems).
