ON AN ORDINARY workday in late March, Infosuite team member Helen put in a fairly routine request: she asked for a day off. Helen described in her diary entry just how much her manager’s response affected her inner work life:

In response to my request for a day off [ . . . ], I got a note from the project manager thanking me for what I had done and reminding me that I had a “free day” coming as a reward for hard work already completed. It made me feel good and made me want to work harder to make the project manager and team a success. It sounds corny, I know, but that’s how I felt . . . it’s nice to feel appreciated. [Helen, 3/22]
