The effective sponsor
What is this about and why is it important?
Projects must be linked into an organisation’s management hierarchy. Without this link they will not gain access to resources, have a mandate and be able to do the things the project needs to do. These links are usually provided by project sponsors. Typically, project managers are dependent on sponsors’ power, authority and influencing skills.
Effective project sponsorship is an important aspect of successful projects. Unfortunately, many sponsors do not fully understand the requirements of the role and make poor sponsors. This section describes the role, and gives some advice to project managers on how to help their sponsor be an effective one.
