Clarifying problems and opportunities
This chapter contains checklists to clarify the problems and opportunities that face an organisation. Well-run projects require a clear definition of the problem they are setting out to solve or the solution they are trying to implement.
3.1 IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES
There are many ways to identify current problems and opportunities – be open to suggestions, be constantly alert for what is happening in the organisation, and be willing to consider change. It is often a vague idea that starts a project rolling. Sources of ideas include:
- Operational management – what issues are arising?
- Performance metrics – what are the areas of underperformance, what are the trends?
