Props versus Electrics

Most theatres have a master electrician who handles all the stage lights. If a prop needs to light up, is that the responsibility of the props department or the electrics department? The answer varies wildly from theatre to theatre, and even from show to show. In general, a props department is responsible for all the parts that are “seen,” and the electrics department is responsible for running all the cable backstage to hook it up to the light board. If a practical table lamp has a plug that is seen by the audience, the props department may add it on, but if the cable runs offstage, the electrics department will add one of their stage pin plugs.
