CHAPTER 5: NEW ORGANIZATIONAL TRAITSFOR A NEW AGE
My father was born in the Boyle Heights section of East Los Angeles. The life of his childhood was difficult. And dangerous. There was a definitive culture of his neighborhood that dictated the skills and attitudes that you needed to survive. There were rules in this culture. Most of them were unstated, but they were rules nonetheless. Never let anyone see weakness. Respect belonged to the guy with the biggest stick. Keep your head down and worry about yourself. If someone messes with you, give it right back to them – don’t let anyone think that they can mess with you and get away with it.
