INTRODUCTION

When it comes to sound design for melodic sounds there are several broad categories of sounds we should consider: bass, pads, stabs, lead sounds, and arpeggiated sounds. This is not a complete list, but it covers most types of sounds you should need. It doesn’t really include many acoustic instruments, but you’re most likely to use samples for acoustic sounds rather than try to program a synth version of them. How many of these are relevant to the particular genre of music you make depends a lot on that genre, but we will take a look at each of them in turn here to make sure you have all bases covered.
