3 Framing impact

3.1 Introduction

In the previous two chapters, we first traced the historical development of thinking about universities’ societal role, pointing to the gradual increase in the nation states’ involvement in determining and assessing the economic and social usefulness of higher education institutions; subsequently, we elaborated on the academic debates on relevance and impact of business and management research. In this chapter, we focus on the UK government’s policy framework for evaluating the quality of research conducted by higher education institutions, i.e. the Research Excellence Framework, and discuss how research impact is framed by the UK policymakers.
