12Pathos: Belief Systems
While the development of our logical thinking is occurring on one side of our heads, how do our beliefs get formed? How do these beliefs impact our logic and behavior? Do our beliefs generate an internal narrative and make our decision-making processes easier? Or do they drive up our pathos (emotion) and sufferings?
Indeed, if you start to peel the layers of belief systems, you might find that a sweeping range of beliefs – especially around the notion of God and religion are being put in practice all around – all these can be very polarizing, divisive, and can lead to bloodshed. Yet how do beliefs proliferate?
OUR BELIEFS DRIVE OUR BEHAVIORS
Kahneman's view is that our fast-thinking modes generate impressions, feelings, and inclinations; when endorsed by our slower side of the brain they become beliefs, attitudes, and intentions. Our foundational beliefs – whether they're formed around God, karma, the nature of people, or the presence of aliens – can drive our behavior and actions.
