While my historic family tree in theatre starts with Stanislavsky and Meyerhold, my personal Tree of Transmission grows from a performance project on Peer Gynt with Zygmunt Molik, an actor of the Polish Laboratory Theatre. He introduced Grotowski’s earlier work on ‘Theatre of Productions’ and ‘Paratheatre’, with its integral physical and vocal training at my acting school in Berlin, in 1982. Grotowski had just finished his latest research period ‘Theatre of Sources’, which I knew very little about.
