Introduction

There is extensive coverage in both the academic and industry literature discussing the growth and patterns of air travel demand, and a number of the chapters in this book raise issues related to this (e.g. see Chapters 1, 2 and 5). However, there is a need to have a separate chapter here to consider the important features of air transport demand in depth as a detailed understanding of these is crucial for the successful management of the industry.
