12 Leaderless leadership in radically decentralized organizations

Introduction

In recent years an increasing number of studies have examined “new” forms of organizing that solve the basic problems of organizing in a distinctively different fashion than their traditional hierarchic counterparts (Billinger & Workiewicz, 2019; Martela, 2019; Puranam et al., 2014). Lately, a nuanced terminology has emerged to signify various alternatives to hierarchy, ranging, for instance, from self-managing organization and self-direction to leaderless organizing, as we will show below.
