I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Where does my scientific career fit into the themes of this book? I offer several of my scientific career objectives.
In “measuring the right thing,” my training as a physicist is at the uppermost. This is in two ways. I made a dedicated effort to contribute to improving instrumentation and methods for understanding biological macromolecules. Central to this theme, I was very fortunate to join the UK’s Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury Laboratory, initially as a joint appointment with Keele University in 1979, where I was able to lead a team to develop the first dedicated protein crystallography beamline at the Daresbury SRS.
