How Is It Computed?

This release is known for having a quick turnaround from when the survey is taken to the time the results are published. Every month, the Richmond Fed surveys about 200 plant managers, purchasing managers, and financial controllers whose firms make up a cross section of the industrial activity in the mid-Atlantic Fed district. Typically, about 50% of those queried mail back their responses in time. About a week later, the Richmond Fed releases the results.

It presents the information a little differently than other regional Fed banks. For most of the questions, the Richmond Fed uses a diffusion index, where the percentage of respondents reporting decreases in activity is subtracted from the percentage of those reporting increases ...
