Ask, Don’t Steal

If you go to film festivals or preview screenings, you will occasionally hear interviews with filmmakers who regale audiences with stories of how they “stole” a location, meaning that they filmed somewhere without securing permission. These adventures make for good stories, but before you adopt such a shoot-from-the-hip approach, consider for a moment the fact that you don’t hear anecdotes from all the producers whose shoots got shut down by property owners or authorities because they failed to secure access to locations.
