As we search for intelligence, we may be looking in the wrong place: what if the intelligent agents that we encounter every day were actually social machines that include billions of participants? Depending on how we draw the boundaries of a system, we may see collective intelligence emerge from the behaviour of organisations such as ant colonies, and the same type of intelligence can be found in the massive social machines that we have created over the past two decades.
