Shooting in DA ’Hood

Standard documentary subject matter such as poverty, social justice, underground culture, etc., will almost always involve at least some shooting in rough areas, euphemistically known as “da ’hood.” Documentary filmmaking can be a foolhardy or even dangerous endeavor if you ignore the real-world issues of class, race, and culture. Over the years I’ve shot extensively in various ‘hoods throughout the country. In almost all cases, the crew I was part of was well-received and got the footage we needed without incident. Here are some tips for shooting in ‘hoods from Baltimore, Maryland to Kabul, Afghanistan.
