Diagnosing Behaviors That Enhance or Hinder Group Effectiveness

In this chapter, we consider how to diagnose behavior in groups. I address the question, How do you watch a group in action and figure out exactly what members are doing that is reducing or increasing their effectiveness? I begin by describing the diagnosis-intervention cycle, which structures how you observe group behavior and draw meaning from it. I show how to use the core values, ground rules, group effectiveness model, and theory-in-use to diagnose what is happening in a group. I end the chapter by considering some challenges in diagnosing behavior.
