GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY WATCHDOGS KEEP AN EYE ON THE SOCIAL WEB

Government and industry regulators have long kept a watchful eye on the content created and business records generated by email messages and attachments. Thanks to the growing use of workplace social media, the bodies that are charged with overseeing heavily regulated industries, including health care and financial services, for example, have now turned their attention to social networking, blogging, and other web 2.0 applications. As a result, 37 percent of companies in the United States and United Kingdom were subjected to at least one regulatory proceeding in 2010, according to Fulbright’s Seventh Annual Litigation Trends Survey.1
