The Place of Craft
THAT THE CAMERA MATTERS IN PHOTOGRAPHY is a truth so blindingly obvious that it borders on the comedic to say it. That we, the photographers, matter more, should also be clear. I love my cameras, often with an affection that would surprise anyone who doesn’t share this strange attachment to tools they love. But I love the creative process and the final photographs so much more. You need to know that. In the following pages, I advocate for the primacy of the latter over the former. You could even say that gear is good, but vision is better; I’ve said it so many times it’s become a mantra. But lest you think I’m advocating total photographic anarchy, let me get the disclaimers out of the way.
