Once upon a time, on a lonely stretch of beach, a burned-out manager sat wearily on a rock. His eyes were downcast under a furrowed brow. His hands were buried deep in his pockets. If he noticed the gentle rumble of the waves on the sand or the happy cries of the gulls on the wind, he didn’t show it. His mind, it seemed, was somewhere else—perhaps under the rock. And in a sense, it was.
His mind was back in the office where he would ordinarily be. Thinking about work made him terribly unhappy, but he couldn’t help himself. Work was a burden he couldn’t put down because he was so worried that no one else would take it up.
