Let’s start with the opening lines. The following opening remarks are scripted to achieve three objectives:

  1. To tell your employee the purpose of the meeting
  2. To limit the employee’s expectations by narrowing her suggestions to things you can control rather than actively inviting conversations about pay, benefits, and other areas where you have less influence, even though you will leave the door open to discuss them if these are important to the employee
  3. To ensure that your encouraging words do not become a legally binding contract, such as by your guaranteeing an employee a job forever when what you meant was that you hope she stays for a long time
