A great mentor is able to recognize and then inspire the greatness in those whom they are mentoring. Mentoring is not about making employees more like you, it is about making them the best possible version of themselves.
Get to know your mentees. Inquire about their lives outside of work while keeping professional boundaries. This will help provide you with insight as to who they are. It will also let them know that you recognize them as people not just as a mentee or employee. Ask them to share some information about themselves.
