Ceena Vang and Zora Bowens had never organized a community protest on their own. But when the Atlanta spa mass shooting claimed the lives of eight people, six of them Asian‐American women, Zora called Ceena and asked if she wanted to organize an event together protesting the nationwide rise in anti‐Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate crimes and rhetoric.

“I was taken aback by it. I was like, Okay, if this is something so impactful that my best friend, a Black woman, feels called to do something, then I need to get on board and do something for my community,” Ceena, who is of first‐generation Hmong descent, said.
